The Social Dilemma

In class this week we are watching The Social Dilemma, which is streamed on Netflix. Directed and written by Jeff Orlowski, it is about the examination of how social media's design nurtures addiction to maximize profit and its ability to manipulate people's views, emotions, and behavior and spread conspiracy theories and disinformation.

The reality that social media is destroying people's brain is quickly becoming prevalent. On Tuesday, we were only able to get halfway through. They were discussing how social media platforms have gone into so much depth to persuade people that when they get a notification, they need to see what it is. That has made people unable to put their cellphones down. The satisfaction people get from others has influenced this heavily.

It is important to understand how social media effects your brain. The constant need to interact with people online has been ruined by algorithms to make more money. After watching this film and doing some research on my own, it scared me. The stomping ground these apps have in our brain will make us do crazy things just for cyber attention.

  1. It is crazy that we use these social media platforms so much and most of us don't realize how they are designed to trick us. I'm sure this is part of how they are designed so people aren't aware of the problem
